miss-caledonia

The year is 1955. Desperate to escape the chicory-pulling, stall-cleaning, hay-baling drudgery of life in RR#2 Caledonia, Peggy Ann Douglas has a plan. Following in the footsteps of starlet Debbie Reynolds, Peggy Ann will simply become a movie star – and she will start her journey to the top by winning the local pageant. Can she sing, twirl and pivot her way into the judges’ hearts, or will shaky nerves and a “Puritanical Work Ethic” sabotage her efforts? Brimming with love, comedy, and a staggering work ethic of its own, Miss Caledonia is a delightful exploration of optimism and reality down on the farm. Supported by delightful fiddle accompaniment, Dora and Canadian Comedy Award winner Melody A. Johnson will have you in the palm of her hand on her quest for the tiara in Miss Caledonia.

Miss Caledonia has toured across the UK and Canada, including runs at Halifax’s Neptune Theatre, Ottawa’s National Arts Centre and Toronto’s Tarragon Theatre.   Melody A. Johnson is the recipient of the Ontario Presents 2014 Artist of the Year award for her work touring MISS CALEDONIA.

Here’s what the critics are saying…

“Miss Caledonia takes the crown. Johnson’s script is a marvel of economy, establishing a no nonsense language that always feels authentic” NNNNN (4 stars) – NOW Magazine

“I would truly pay money to hear Johnson read the phonebook…she really knows how to deliver the goods.” – The Toronto Star

“Looks, charm, and no end of congeniality…a winning show you’d take your grandmother or granddaughter to in a wink.” – The Globe and Mail ****

“Like an exquisitely polished wooden bowl, Miss Caledonia is a winning combination of down-to-earth charm and finely honed craft.” – The Georgia Straight, B.C.

“Powerful simplicity make Miss Caledonia a prime example of the scope and spirit of Canadian theatre.” – Mooney on Theatre

About Melody A. Johnson
